A Theme Brings Focus To Your Outdoor Garden

By Glenna Andree

When you're investing sweat equity into your favorite corner of the world, every little change seems like a step toward your goal. You start with an idea about what your outdoor garden will look like but the final result might not resemble that picture. Rather than buying a statue or a fountain and hoping that it will pull everything together, why not take a step back and determine exactly what you need?

Step One - Consider your Theme.

Every garden starts off with a theme. You might think you don't have one because you never wrote it down but in your mind, there is something you think your garden should look like. If you didn't write it down, now is the time to do so. That way you can compare your ideal with the current state of your garden.

For instance, if you wanted your garden to be romantic with hidden nooks and bubbling fountains, that is your theme. Maybe you just wanted a quiet spot to rest. Then a tranquil theme with benches or other seating and again a fountain to mask background noise is in order. Maybe your dream garden is a family spot with green play areas and a shady spot to read a book. What ever it is, writing it down will help you clearly define what you are trying to create.

Step Two - Establish a Plan.

This isn't as hard as it sounds. Once you have found your theme, compare it to the state of your current garden. Any areas that don't match up tell you what steps to take to get from one to the other. If you need help, you can Google Search something like "romantic garden theme". Many people like to share pictures of their garden and you can find some great ideas online. Your garden will begin to take shape as you add what you like to the plan you already have.

Step Three - Finishing Touches

Now that your garden is starting to match the ideal one you wanted, it's time to shop for the extras that will make it shine. Knowing your overall theme will make shopping for an outdoor garden statue or fountain much easier. You will know if you need something that shines in the sun or quietly brightens a shady corner and will be much happier with the final result.

Contributor's Note

I love seeing what other people have done with their gardens. Each fountain, statue, wind element, etc. tells a story about the person who placed it there. What a generous thing to share your creative impulses with a stranger passing by.
